Chola Pass Trek (17 Days)

The increasingly popular Chola pass trekking route provides an interesting alternative high level route from Gorag Shep to Gokyo. It is however difficult in bad weather and may require crampon’s.

The Route

Your adventure begins with a short but scenic flight from Kathmandu, to the small mountain village of Lukla. You will experience the thrill of approaching and landing on its tiny, uphill, runway!  From Lukla you will be trekking through the heartland of the Sherpa people and staying in their villages. You will also experience their culture and visit Buddhist monasteries. Our trek follows the Dudh Kosi River, and along its route you will see ever closer views of Everest. There are also many other spectacular views such as neighbouring Ama Dablam. This peak is considered by many, including myself, to be among the most beautiful mountains in Nepal. A rest day will be spent at Namche Bazaar, a busy market town in the heart of Sherpa country. These rest days allow time to explore the surrounding areas and to acclimatize.

Acclimatization

The second rest day will be spent at Dingboche. Those who have fully acclimatized are less likely to suffer acute mountain sickness (AMS).

Magnificent Scenery

Whilst trekking towards Everest Base Camp, Chola pass and Gokyo Lake you will witness views of the famous Khumbu Ice-fall. In addition you may see the numerous climbing groups preparing to climb Everest and other high peaks. However the highlight for most will be the early morning ascent of Kala Patthar (5550 m/ 18315 ft). Standing on its peak, with the sun rising and Mt Pumori (7165 m/ 23644 ft) in the background. Here you will have an unrivaled panoramic view of the Khumbu glacier, Nuptse and the southwest face of Everest itself

Chola Pass

The trail from Gorag Shep to Gokyo ascends through Zhongla on the famous pass  “Cho la”. You will wander past small yak-grazing settlements and eventually arrive at the Gokyo lakes. From Here you will climb Gokyo Ri (5480 m) with its stunning mountain scenery including Everest, Makalu and Cho Oyo.

Leaving Gokyo Lake, we spend the next few days trekking down to Namche Bazaar. The descent  enables you to you take in the views in relative comfort whilst reflecting on your accomplishments and experiences. From Namche Bazaar, it is a very pleasant day’s walk to Lukla and your flight to Kathmandu.
