Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve

Covering an area of 1,325 square km the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve is the only Hunting Reserve in Nepal. Its elevation varies from 2,850m to 5,500m. The reserve consists of forests, marshland and meadows and it is also host to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The Snow Leopard is very shy and therefore one of the reserves more noteworthy species to look out for.

Vegetation

Well-developed mixed-hardwood forests at lower elevations typify the area’s vegetation. There are many plant species of drier climate to the north. Tree species include fir, pine, birch, rhododendron, hemlock, oak, juniper and spruce.

Population

As in many other protected environments of Nepal, the reserve includes several villages inhabited by hill tribes. There are also people of Tibetan descent who supplement farming with trade and in addition animal husbandry. The reserve is one of the prime habitats of blue sheep, a highly prized trophy animal. Other species include Ghoral, Serow, Himalayan Tahr, Black Bear, Pheasant and Partridge. Endangered species of the area include the Red Panda and Cheer Pheasant.

Hunting

Controlled hunting in certain seasons of the year is also only allowed subject to proper licensing. The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu therefore issue these licenses. There are a few hunting outfitters who can make arrangements for the equipment needed on expeditions.

Dhorpatan is a rarely visited area and its protection and conservation policy has therefore enabled animal numbers to increase. For this reason it is a genuinely attractive destination for the trekkers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
