Hilsa is located on the border with the Chinese Tibet Autonomous Region. Nearby the Humla Karnali river rushes onward on its route to join the most sacred river Ganges.

Purang (Burang) is reputed to be the home of Sudhana who was an incarnation of the Lord Buddha and it was traditionally a trading post.

Situated on a cliff overlooking the town were the ancient fort of Tegla Kar  and Simbiling Monastery. These were both destroyed by Chinese artillery during the Cultural Revolution however the monastery is being restored. Lower down there is the “nine Storey” Tsegu Gompa which is noted for centuries old wall paintings and somewhat difficult access.

The terrain is quite untamed with only a few trees, in many ways it resembles the Tibetan landscape. Landing here is by helicopter.
