Koshi-Tappu wildlife
The Koshi-Tappu wildlife Reserve
Koshi-Tappu wildlife reserve is named after the biggest river of Nepal, “the Koshi”. Established in 1976 it covers an area of 175 sq. km to the north. There is a one kilometre long barrage that spans the Koshi River. It is situated on the flood plains of the Sapta-Koshi River in Eastern Nepal.
Mammals
The reserve is home to many types of mammals such as spotted deer, wild boar, hog deer, and blue bull. The Koshi River has also had sightings of the endangered Gangetic dolphin and Gharial crocodile.
Birds
Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is home to more than 280 bird species. Species include Duck, ibises, storks, egrets and herons. The Swamp partridge and Bengal Florican which are endangered species can also found here. The Koshi Barge is therefore an extremely important resting-place for migratory birds.
During October to April it is possible to spot more than 100 species in a single day of birding. There are flocks of ducks often in excess of 50,000, these are predominantly northern Pintails.
Mallard and Northern Shoveler are also a common sight during fall and winter.

Conservation
Nepal’s only wild Buffalo (Arna) population live in the Koshi-Tappu Wildlife Reserve, population has grown from 63 in 1976 to 432 individuals with 120 males, 182 females and 130 calves according to a 2016 survey.

Drive or fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar. After arrival you will be presented with brief introduction of the facility and program. This day’s attractions include bird watch in the marshland outside the reserve to see the strokes, ibises, snipes, waterfowl, birds of prey etc. In the evening you can enjoy cultural program performed by local people. After breakfast you set out for full day excursion on boat and four wheels drive with packed lunch to see waders, waterfowl, birds of prey, marsh crocodile, otters, wild water buffalo and Gangetic Dolphins including a visit to Pink Tower.

After a wholesome breakfast you go for bird watch inside the reserve in the scrub forest, grasslands and wetland habitat with lunch packs to see swamp partridge, black necked stork, buntings, bulbuls etc. In the afternoon you can either continue bird watching or enjoy optional elephant ride to watch Arna, the wild water buffalo, blue bull, hog deer, fishing etc
