Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve
The Reserve
Shuklaphanta wildlife reserve is one of the largest national parks in the country, it was established in 1976.
The Shuklaphanta wildlife reserve in the far western Terai is on the southwest edge of Nepal. It covers parts of Dolpa and Mugu District with an area of 305 sq km.
The name Shuklaphanta comes from the largest of these grasslands. Shuklaphanta is two thirds forest and one third grassland. This grassland is the largest in Nepal and occupies an area of 54 sq km. The open grasslands and numerous waterholes of the park extend into a vast expanse of plain grasslands and Sal forests. Marsh vegetation is found along rivers and lakes.
Jungle Safari
The jungle safari in the Shuklaphanta wildlife reserve is an exciting and engaging exploration of the lush pristine subtropical jungle. Many species of threatened animals now live in the reserve. High-speed hare, pygmy hog, Snow leopard, Bengal tigers, rhinos, crocodiles, wild elephants and swamp deer are all native to the reserve.
Th reserve was Originally a hunting area however fortunately it was later converted to a wildlife reserve. This change was principally in order to preserve the swamp deer.
Shuklaphanta now shelters almost 2000 swamp deer as well as around 50 wild elephants and 30 tigers.
Spotted deer, blue bulls, barking deer, hog deer, wild boars, leopards, jackals, langurs and rhesus monkeys also reside here. Among birds the reserve provides habitat to sarus crane, swamp francolin, grass owl, warblers, flycatchers, and the endangered Bengal Florican. Reptile species include marsh mugger, crocodile, cobra and python. The reserve also holds Nepal’s largest breeding population of Bengal floricans and hispid hare. The Rani Tal inside the reserve is therefore a great attraction for animals and migratory birds.
